Aino Private Island

—exclusive adults’ retreat in nature’s embrace

There exists an island where time feels infinite, that invites you to indulge in life’s rare luxuries: serenity, comfort and the charm of Arctic nature. There, the whispers of the forest meet the gentle lapping of the river—that place is known as Aino Private Island. This exclusive retreat for adults, set against the inspiring scenery of Rovaniemi’s wilderness and accessible only by an elegant suspension bridge, offers an escape into the grandeur of nature and the essence of Nordic luxury.

The setting on the island offers two distinct experiences: eleven unique suites and our private villa, each a testament to Nordic elegance. The suites draw inspiration from Lapland’s natural beauty through soft colour palette and classy wooden details, while the villa provides a private haven—a charming residence where elevated comfort and soothing surroundings merge seamlessly. Get private access to the entire island or request just the villa or hotel suites, whatever suits your needs.

Our philosophy behind the services on the island is explicit: customised experiences and stays, intuitive and personalised care and attention for our guests. To make every moment with us more perfect than the one before.

Our private island will undergo renovations in April-October 2025 to be re-opened with improvements and fully remodelled suites, on 1 November 2025.

The contrasting history of war and peace

Throughout its rich history, the island has stood both at the feet of war and as a haven of utter tranquillity. The known history of Aino dates back to the 1700s, when the island served as a vital guard post where the guards could observe any approaching threats and light watchfires, known as “Totto fires” to warn the city of Rovaniemi. Later, during the turbulence of World War II, it became a strategic stronghold for the Finnish long-range patrols and radio operations.

Yet, between these moments of hostility, Aino was also a place of profound peace. In the 19th century, the island embraced a softer chapter, becoming the cherished retreat of Pharmacist Axel Castren and his beloved wife, Aino. Their days here were filled with quiet joy, and the island became a refuge of happiness and tranquillity—a spirit that has now been lovingly restored to this exclusive retreat.

Over time, the island has welcomed many very distinguished guests from all around the world, including Queen Margrethe of Denmark and Prince Henrik, the prince of Luxembourg and the Presidents of India, Estonia and Finland.
